SPORTS DAY & PTA FAMILY PICNIC
Our school Sports Day is on Thursday 9th July from 1.45pm to 3.25pm, and you are most welcome to join us to
support and encourage the children. All of the children will take part in at least two races each so please ensure
that they have their outdoor PE kit, a hat and a bottle of water on that day. There are also parents’ races, so please
wear the appropriate footwear if you wish to join in.
At the end of the afternoon, you are most welcome to stay on the school field to play games and have a picnic with
members of the PTA. Louise Siraj, parent of Aisha in Year 4, is organising this activity.
OPEN EVENING
Our Open Evening will take place on Tuesday 7th July between 5pm and 7pm. Please come along to school with your
child, so that he/she may share their books and work with you. You are also welcome to spend time looking around
school and chatting with the teachers.
Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers/Tesco Vouchers/Times Book Vouchers/Plastic Tops
We have collected thousands of Sainsbury’s vouchers and as a result we are ordering a variety of play equipment
for PE lessons and break times.
We are ‘banking’ the Tesco vouchers until next year so that we can ‘afford’ items that require a large number of
vouchers.
We have received a set of reading books from The Times, and will put in another order soon.
We have purchased a picnic table (made out of recycled plastic) for the Upper Key Stage 2 playground, and
received 20% discount because of the amount of bottle tops we had collected. Please continue to save these and to
send them into school as we intend to eventually replace all of the outdoor wooden furniture with recycled plastic
ones.
Many thanks for taking the trouble to collect them.
PE KITS
Another reminder as there are still lots of children regularly ‘forgetting’ to bring their PE kit to school!!
All children are expected to change for PE into agreed clothing for each activity area.
This is as follows:
Indoors: t-shirt and shorts. All indoor work is done in bare feet.
Outdoors: as above plus trainers/plimsolls, socks and suitable warm clothing and a hat appropriate to the time of
year.
If a child does not have their trainers/pumps in school, for Health and Safety reasons, they cannot take part in PE
lessons outdoors. We do have spare PE clothes which children can borrow on the occasions that they leave their kit
at home.
Please make sure that your child has their PE kit including a pair of trainers or pumps in school every day –
especially on Sports Day!!
OUTDOOR PLAY
As we continue with the very hot weather, please send your child to school with a named hat or cap for protection
from the sun. Headgear is useful at playtimes as well as during outdoor PE lessons. If your child requires sun
cream or lotion then please administer this before school, as school staff are not allowed to do this. Sun cream
that lasts for up to 10 hours can be purchased from Boots the Chemist and other chemist shops/supermarkets.
We encourage all children to drink water on a regular basis – there are water fountains in all of the cloakroom
areas. Children can also bring their own named drinks bottle with a sports top to school. Juice or flavoured
water is not allowed.
SCHOOL GOVERNORS
It was pointed out by many of you via the Questionnaire that you did not really know who our Governors are and
what their role in school is. We have asked each Governor to provide a photograph of themselves and some brief
notes about who they are and about their role on the Governing Body of our school. This will be sent out to you at
the beginning of the new school year.
In the meantime…. The school’s Governing Body is made up of local people who voluntarily give up their time to
serve the community by working to ensure that our children receive the best possible education.
Governors are like a board of directors who share decision making about how the school is run. Whilst it is a
responsibility, training is available to help prepare for it. At Highburton the full Governing Body usually meets
once or twice a term, with sub-committee meetings when needed.
The minutes of the Governors’ meetings are available from the school office for anyone interested. Parents elect a
Parent Governor for a four-year period and they are notified when the next election is due. Our Chair of
Governors, Mr Keith Wigglesworth, can be contacted through school.
